First-time configuration

This walkthrough takes an empty site to a public production page with credits and performances, adds the public lists, and finishes with the Hype5 Stage theme if you use it.

On this page

The steps use the Hype5 app, which Hype5 Theater in the WordPress sidebar opens for everyone with a Hype5 Theater administration permission. Each step also names in parentheses the screen of the classic Hype5 Theater menu that does the same job, for sites that switch the app off (see Who can open it).

1. Check WordPress settings

  • Settings → General: choose a named time zone and the date and time formats you want on the site.
  • Settings → Permalinks: choose any structure other than Plain.

2. Create a venue

  1. Open Hype5 Theater → Venues → Add venue (classic menu: Content → Venues → Add Venue).
  2. Enter the name as the title, then the address, city and country, and the room or hall if useful.
  3. Under accessibility, set wheelchair access and hearing loop to Yes, No or leave them unknown. These are defaults for the venue's performances.
  4. Publish (in the app: Save, then publish). Public schedules name only published venues.

See Venues.

3. Create a production

  1. Open Hype5 Theater → Productions → Add production (classic menu: Content → Productions → Add Production).
  2. Enter the title and the production text. Add a short introduction (teaser), a poster image (featured image), the repertory status (Coming soon, Playing, On hold or Archived), the premiere date and venue, duration, language, genres and audience recommendations.
  3. Save as a draft or publish. In the app the first Save as draft creates the production; publishing is a separate step in the Publishing… panel.

See Productions.

4. Add people and credits

  1. Optionally create person profiles in People → Add person, or with Create a new person directly from the credits editor (classic menu: Content → People → Add Person).
  2. In the production, open Credits (Meeskond) (classic editor: Credits). Add one row per relationship: choose a person or type a name, enter the job (for example Director) and, for performers, the character. Choose the group (Cast, Creative, Production team, Technical, With Thanks).
  3. Save the production.

Changing credits needs the manage credits permission. See People and credits.

5. Add performances

Performances are separate records, not part of the production form.

  1. Open Hype5 Theater → Schedule, or Performances inside the production editor (classic menu: Schedule).
  2. Use the composer modes One performance, Series or Tour (classic screen: Quick Add, Add Multiple Dates, Tour Entry).
  3. Choose the production, venue, date, start time and time zone. Add ticket offers with the seller's web address, prices and availability if tickets are sold elsewhere.
  4. Save.

See Schedule.

6. Publish

A production's page and its performances appear publicly only when the production is published without a password. A password-protected production shows only its title and WordPress's password form; its performances are left out of the general schedule and other lists. See Security and content visibility.

7. Add the public lists

Each collection has a built-in address:

Collection Built-in address
Productions the productions archive, /productions/ by default
People the people archive, /people/ by default
Schedule /?hype5_collection=schedule

To place a collection on a page of your own instead:

  1. Create a page with the matching shortcode, for example [hype5_productions], [hype5_people] or [hype5_schedule] (see Shortcodes), and publish it.
  2. Select the page as the collection page in Appearance → Lists and pages → Collection pages (classic menu: Appearance → Collections → Collection routes).

The built-in address then redirects (HTTP 302) to the chosen page, keeping filter parameters. Individual production and person pages keep their addresses.

The archive addresses depend on the permalink bases in Settings.

8. Optional: switch to Hype5 Stage

If you use the Hype5 Stage theme:

  1. Install and activate it (see Installation).
  2. In Appearance → Menus, create a menu with top-level items only and assign it to Main menu. Without a main menu Stage lists the schedule, productions and people collections and up to five top-level pages.
  3. The site's front page becomes the Marquee home page. To add your own introduction below it, choose a static page as the front page in Settings → Reading; its content is shown under the Marquee. See Home page.
  4. In Appearance → Customise → Site Identity, upload a logo (PNG) and a site icon.
  5. Review Appearance → Customise → Hype5 Stage: the default colour scheme, the number of performances and posters on the home page, and the header button.

Stage reads the plugin's Appearance settings as they are saved, so production pages keep the layouts you chose in the Appearance studio.
