Hype5 Theater 0.6.17 · Pre-release

Media and galleries

Images and files come from the WordPress media library. Hype5 Theater stores which media belong to a production or person; the files themselves, and their captions and credits, stay in the media library.

On this page

Production media

Open a production and choose Media and materials (Meedia ja materjalid) in the Hype5 app, or the Media tab in the classic editor.

Item What it is
Poster The production's featured image, set in Story and details. Used on the production page, cards and lists. The Overview reminds you about published productions without a poster (archived productions excluded).
Gallery Images from the media library, in the order you choose. Drag to reorder, or use Alt + arrow keys. The same image is not added twice.
People in images Tag people who appear in each gallery image. Tagged images also appear in those people's public galleries (see below).
Programme One file — a PDF, image or another document the media library supports. The programme is per language on multilingual sites.
Additional files Downloadable documents, each with an optional title and description.
Videos Links to trailers, interviews or other videos, each with an optional description.
Audio Links to interviews, audio introductions or other embeddable audio (for example SoundCloud).
External galleries Links to Flickr or another external gallery. Supported links are embedded; others are shown as a normal link.

All of these save with the production's Save, except that new files are uploaded through the media library as usual.

Removing media never deletes files

Removing an image or file from a production removes only the association. The file stays in the media library and is never deleted or duplicated by Hype5. If a file referenced by a production has been deleted from the media library, the editor shows it as missing and keeps the reference until you remove it.

Captions, alternative text and photographer credits

Caption, alternative text and photographer belong to the media file, not to the production, and are edited in WordPress's attachment editor (Media → Library). A change there applies wherever the image is used. Hype5 adds two fields to attachments: Photographer and Photographer link. When the photographer field is empty, the image's embedded IPTC credit is used. Developers can change the credit with the hype5t_image_credit filter.

Write useful alternative text for every gallery image and poster; it is what screen-reader users hear.

Person media

In the person editor, Portrait and gallery (Portree ja galerii) holds:

  • the portrait (the person's featured image);
  • an ordered profile gallery from the media library;
  • read-only, the images from production galleries in which the person is tagged.

A tagged image appears in the person's public gallery only while its production is published without a password (also in the reader's language on multilingual sites).

Tagging someone in an image needs permission to add media (upload_files) and read access to that person; it does not need permission to edit the person.

How images are shown

Hype5 keeps the original proportions of images by default. Gallery and portrait presentation are display options, set globally in the Appearance studio, per production or person under Display, or per shortcode:

Option Values Effect
Gallery layout grid, masonry, carousel, feature The arrangement of a production or person gallery, chosen in Appearance. The carousel does not play by itself.
gallery_fit natural, cover Keep each image's proportions, or crop to equal frames.
gallery_columns 3, 2, 4 Columns in grid layouts.
gallery_lightbox on, off Open images in the image viewer.
gallery_captions, gallery_credits on, off Show captions and photographer credits.
gallery_people lightbox, never, under Where the names of tagged people are shown.
image_credits on, off Photographer credits on single images such as the poster.
directory_fit natural, cover Portraits in the people directory.

For the other options the first value listed is the built-in default. The full list is in Shortcodes → Display options.

Shortcodes for media: [hype5_production_image] (poster), [hype5_production_gallery], [hype5_production_media] (videos, audio, external galleries, programme and files), [hype5_person_image] and [hype5_person_gallery]. See Shortcodes.

Multilingual sites

The gallery, its people tags and the file, video, audio and external-gallery rows belong to the original-language production and are read-only on a translation, with a link to the original. The programme file is each translation's own. See Translation and localisation.
