Hype5 Stage 1.0.2 · Pre-release

Accessibility

Stage was designed and tested for keyboard use, visible focus, sufficient contrast in both colour schemes, reduced motion and forced colours. Testing with screen readers and real phones is still to be done.

Features

  • Skip link to the main content at the top of every page.
  • Keyboard: every link and button can be reached and has a visible focus indicator, also on the home page's photograph.
  • Mobile menu as a modal dialog: focus stays inside, Esc closes it and focus returns to the menu button.
  • Current page marked with aria-current in menus and breadcrumbs, not only visually.
  • Contrast: text on the home-page photograph was measured at 4.5:1 or better against a white photograph; form fields have 3:1 outlines.
  • Touch targets of at least 44 px.
  • Headings in a logical order; post cards are headings; the schedule page has its own browser title.
  • Reduced motion: the Lights fade is skipped and the home-page film never plays by itself when the visitor prefers reduced motion.
  • Forced colours (for example Windows High Contrast): states remain visible and logos are shown as uploaded.
  • No JavaScript: content, navigation and the default colour scheme still work.
  • Alternative text: images such as the logo use the alternative text saved in the media library.

These are automated and keyboard tests in Chromium. They are recorded in the theme's test documentation.

Not yet tested

  • Screen readers (for example NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver) — no session has been carried out yet.
  • Real phones and tablets — layouts were checked at phone and tablet widths in a desktop browser only.

A manual pass with a screen reader and real devices is recommended before the public launch. Until then, Stage makes no claim of conformance beyond the automated results above.

What editors can do

  • Write alternative text for every image in the media library — logos, posters, portraits and gallery images.
  • Choose a shade under the text strong enough for the brightest part of the home-page photograph.
  • Keep the main menu short; it shows top-level items only.
  • Use headings in order inside page content.
  • Add an accessibility statement page and link it in the Footer: legal links menu.
  • For Hype5 Theater content, fill in visitor information, venue accessibility and performance services, so visitors can plan their visit.
